- Tubing at La Vern M Johnson Park (In Lyons)
This is a favorite stop in the late summer for our clan. Once the river has slowed down for a peaceful lazy river float we love to take the kids. We put the youngest in life jackets just to be safe. The thing that I love about this park is the U-shape the river makes so the kids can get off the river and run across the park and float down again and again. The little beach-like areas and stone steps to get down to the water make for easy splash play areas for the littles.

2. McIntosh Lake
This beautiful lake located in Longmont has a great view of Longs Peak. And that magic hour near the end of a long day! Plenty of picnic tables along the lake for long hours of fun. There are volleyball spots and of course, the main attraction here is for paddleboarding. There is no swimming allowed, but that doesn’t stop us from getting our toes wet on a hot summer day.

3. Sunset Swimming Pool
This go-to summer stop is always a hit with my playgroup crowd. Your basic swimming fun with two fun waterslides, 3 diving boards, and plenty of grass areas for a low-key water adventure.

4. Sunflowers at Anderson Farms (Eerie)
This was something that I was super excited to go see. You have to grab tickets to Anderson Farms wagon rides to go sunflower picking fast as they quickly sell out. They usually start to go for sale at the beginning of July. I highly recommend grabbing the last ones of the day that they offer or early morning. This year I plan to return to do their sunflower painting classes with my daughter! How fun! Openings typically run from the very end of July through the end of August. We went on the last weekend they were open and there were still sunflowers galore all around.

My kids had such a blast running through rows and rows of sunflowers and helping choose their favorites.

5. Kids Summer Film Series
These Longmont kid’s summer movie series is a great excuse to enjoy an affordable movie with the kids in air-conditioning during those hot summer days. They play them in the morning at the Longmont Museum and showcase fun movies like Lady and Tramp and Finding Nemo. Tickets are $3 for just the movie or $5 for the movie + popcorn!

6. Visit the Boulder County Farmers Market
The vibe alone is a fun outing. An added bonus for the kids is free crafts, and entertainment like Bluegrass bands.

7. Plan a morning visit to watch the airplanes and skydivers come in at the Longmont airport.
The fun thing about this is there is easy parking and places to sit to watch the planes come in. Pair the outing with a fun airplane craft to go with a theme.

8. Free Kids Activities at Sandstone Ranch
Sandstone Ranch hosts free activities for kids, with a suggested donation of $2. Crafts, beginning birdwatching, guided walks, and more!
After a fun activity at the ranch, head over to the other side of the park to the splash pad play park to cool off and enjoy some lunch.

9. Fishing and Feeding the Trout at McCall Reservior (just off 66 on the way to Lyons)
With a beautiful view of Longs Peak, enjoy a peaceful afternoon watching for fish and throwing a line.
10. Tubing at Dickens Farm Nature Area
No fee is required. Something I like about this tubing area is it is developed in a way to have large float-around ponds. There is also a deep area to swim around near the bridge.

Beginner family tubing tip: the bigger the tube the better. Don’t go for the flimsy pool tube.
